In the world of contract furniture, beauty does not have to come at the expense of performance. At IROCO Design, we understand that the most successful interiors—whether a high-end restaurant in Aoyama or a boutique hotel in Kyoto—are not only visually compelling, but built to last.

The upholstery fabric one chooses is not a detail—it’s a decision that determines the durability, feel, and function of your space. In high-traffic environments where people gather, live and inevitably spill, choosing the right material means protecting your space without compromising on style. Whether picking a reception chair, office furniture, or lounge table setting, here’s IROCO Design’s guide on how to choose upholstery that stands a chance.

The Standard That Matters: What is the Martindale Test?

When evaluating durability, the Martindale Test remains an industry standard. This abrasion-resistance test mimics natural wear by rubbing fabric in a circular motion until it visibly breaks down. The result is measured in cycles:

10,000–15,000: Light residential use

15,000–25,000: Standard home settings

25,000–40,000: Light commercial or heavy domestic use

40,000+: Ideal for hospitality, public seating, and contract-grade projects

At IROCO Design, many of the fabrics featured on our platform exceed 40,000 of the Martindale cycles—ensuring long-term performance for settings such as restaurants, hotel lobbies and reception, FF&E projects, and more.

IROCO Design's Recommended Upholstery Fabrics for High-Traffic Use

1. Trevira CS & Contract-Grade Polyesters

Favored for their flame resistance, colorfastness, and stain repellency, Trevira CS and similar performance polyesters are common in modern public furniture and hospitality seating options. Their dense weave patterns resist dust accumulation and ensure their easy maintenance—ideal for restaurants, event spaces, and office chairs, where messes may be regular occurrences.

2. Wool Blends

Wool, being naturally moisture-resistant and breathable (popular among our brands Sancal and Arper offers a luxurious texture while resisting wrinkling, sagging, and dust. The density of wool is perfect for acoustic furniture, waiting rooms, or other areas where noise absorption is a priority.

3. Solution-Dyed Acrylics (Sunbrella, etc.)

While solution-dyed acrylics were originally developed for outdoor furniture, they’re also UV-resistant, water-repellent, and nearly impervious to red wine, which has increased their popularity as an upholstery of choice. As solution-dyed acrylic textures soften and expand, these fabrics are now being integrated into indoor lounge tables, garden bench seating, and resort interiors alike.

4. Microfibers (Alcantara, Ultrasuede)

These cutting-edge synthetics combine a luxurious hand-feel with resistance to stains, fading, and daily wear. Commonly used in aviation, automotive, and now designer furniture procurement, they’re ideal for high-use pieces like memo-desk chairs or upscale office furniture.

5. Vinyl & Eco-Leather

For high table seating in restaurants or cafés, vinyl and premium PU leathers offer elegance that wipes clean. Today’s eco-leather alternatives mimic the feel of traditional leather without the maintenance demands, making them a favorite in F&B interiors and public spaces where spills are inevitable.

Longevity is Luxury.

Today’s commercial spaces demand more from their interiors. A chair is not just a seat. A fabric is not just a surface. It is the crossroads of comfort, design, and durability. With IROCO Design, you can specify your independent needs with confidence—knowing each piece has been curated for elegance and the evolving rhythm of public life.
