The Art of Maximising Small Spaces

Hong Kong residents are masters of making the most out of limited space, and with rising property prices in major cities worldwide, clever space-saving strategies have become essential. Sonia Jackson of IROCO Design shares five practical tips to help you maximize every square inch in your home:

Opt for Light and Bright
Choose pale, fresh furniture to visually lift a room. A white desk and chair create an unobtrusive home office, while transparent acrylic pieces, like the Pic Table by Max Design, keep spaces feeling open. Tables with open metal bases, such as those from the Tray Table range or Hay’s DLM Collection, also help maintain an uncluttered look. [Explore our wide selection of Hay furniture available in Hong Kong here.]

Find Double-duty Pieces
Furniture on castors is perfect for rooms serving multiple functions—easy to roll away when needed. Think versatile: a stool can double as an end table or extra seating, and ottomans with trays can become coffee tables. IROCO Design offers a stylish range of ottomans and poufs ideal for these purposes.

Be Creative with Lighting
Skip table lamps that demand surface space. Instead, install wall-mounted sconces or other mounted lighting solutions to free up tables and keep the floor clear.

Don’t Neglect Corners
Transform overlooked corners with accent chairs like Starck’s Louis Ghost or the Victoria Chair. Create a cozy reading nook by placing comfy seating, such as the Pasha Armchair, alongside a side table at an angle against the wall.

Swap Sofas for Settees
Oversized sofas can overwhelm a small room. Consider smaller settees like the Pix Poufs by Arper or the Loop Centre 3S, which fit snugly without crowding. Leaving a slight gap between the back of the sofa or settee and the wall enhances the sense of openness.

With thoughtful choices, even the tiniest spaces can feel inviting and spacious.
