The Shape of Things to Come

New year, new trends. While the world of interiors often takes cues from international catwalks, global politics and cultural shifts also shape how we want our spaces to feel. Alex Henrich, CEO of IROCO Design Japan, shares six design trends set to dominate this year:

Jewel Tones
Say goodbye to pale pinks and blues — 2022 embraces rich jewel tones for a sophisticated look dubbed Modern Natural. Think midnight blues, forest greens, and chocolate browns. Leading brands like Hay’s About A Chair come in covetable shades such as Hunter and Warm Red. Meanwhile, Portuguese furniture suppliers like Insidherland offer striking upholstery in Atlantic Blue, Espresso, Olive, and Esmerald.

The New Metals
Warm metals remain popular but with a twist: shiny finishes give way to muted, vintage burnished looks. Tom Dixon’s lighting designs like Curve and Melt are classics, while DelightFULL’s Heritage Lighting and Italian brand Pedrali’s elegant mixed-metal tables continue to impress. IROCO Design offers a curated selection of these designer furniture pieces in Japan and Hong Kong.

Texture
Layering textures is back, now with innovative techniques like pleating and folding in velvet and cotton fabrics. DelightFULL’s Doris Armchair with velvet ruching and the pleated upholstery on the Bogarde Armchair add tactile interest that enhances office furniture and public spaces alike.

Artisanal Craftsmanship
Handmade, folk-inspired designs continue to captivate, reflecting a move away from mass production. Insidherland’s catalogue features imaginative pieces such as leaf-inspired mirrors and rock-shaped furniture, with bespoke options available.

Wood
Dark woods like walnut and oak are trending, often paired with steel greys and metallic accents for a sleek yet warm look. DelightFULL’s Anthony Sideboard and Insidherland’s Special Tree Sideboard combine solid wood and brass details for stunning contract furniture perfect for offices or public spaces.
